What Is Clean Beauty? And Why Does It Matter for Natural Ageing?
Iāve always believed that overall wellness isnāt about quick fixes ā itās about working with your body, not against it. From supporting hormones to energy, mood and sleep, everything we create at Mister Jones is rooted in gentle, long-term care. And our skincare is no different.
So what does Clean Beauty mean? Why does it matter? And how does it supports natural ageing?
Clean beauty is about using skincare thatās safe for your body and kind to your skin. Free from questionable chemicals, hormone disruptors or unnecessary synthetics. That doesnāt always mean 100% natural (though it can). It means being transparent, thoughtful, and health-first when it comes to what goes on your skin, especially as your hormones and skin change over time.
Some of the ingredients clean beauty avoids include parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, PEGs, SLS, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. Instead, it focuses on gentle, effective ingredients like botanical extracts, vitamin C and E, natural oils (such as jojoba, rosehip, and sea buckthorn), ceramides, and bakuchiol ā a natural retinol alternative thatās perfect for sensitive skin.
The average woman uses around 12 personal care products per day, exposing herself to more than 160 unique chemical ingredients daily, many of which are applied directly to the skin or inhaled through fragrance. Multiple studies have detected traces of these substances in peopleās blood, hair, urine and even breast milk. These findings come from various clinical trials. One being a published review in Environmental Health Perspectives,Ā which highlights how routine beauty and hygiene habits can contribute to ongoing chemical exposure.
Women in particular frequently use more fragranced products like skincare, shampoo, deodorants, and cosmetics. As a result, they tend to show higher concentrations of phthalates and parabens in their bodies, according to a 2023 study published in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology.
Another example is the well-known HERMOSA study, which found that teenage girls who used conventional beauty products had significantly higher levels of parabens, phenols, and phthalates in their urine than those who switched to lower-chemical alternatives. (Romero-Franco et al., 2018)
So what does this mean?
Many of these chemicals, including parabens, phthalates, and phenols,Ā are considered endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with your hormone system. Ongoing exposure has been linked in studies to concerns such as:
- fertility issues,
- thyroid disruption,
- earlier onset of puberty,
- and potential changes to breast tissue development.
For those in perimenopause or beyond, these compounds may also:
- worsen symptoms related to hormonal imbalance,
- increase inflammation,
- or impact skin sensitivity and barrier function.
While more research is ongoing, the cumulative effect of small daily exposures is becoming harder to ignore - which is exactly why the clean beauty movement is so important to consider.
As a brand that values hormone health, these findings are especially important to us - particularly during stages like perimenopause when the body is more sensitive to internal and external shifts.
Your skin is a living organ that changes with time. Menopause, stress, sleep, and diet all affect how it looks and feels. At Mister Jones, we donāt believe in āanti-ageingā - we believe in supporting skin to age well, naturally.
Clean beauty is all about reducing the toxic load, supporting your skin barrier, and working with your body rather than forcing change.
Here are three simple ways to move toward clean(er) self-care:
1. Simplify your routine
Less is often more. Focus on gentle, multipurpose products with clear, recognisable ingredients.
2. Ditch synthetic fragrance
āFragranceā can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Choose unscented or naturally scented products when you can.
3. Read the ingredient list
Start becoming familiar with additives like parabens, PEGs, and phthalates. Awareness is the first step toward making more informed choices.
